Meet three women who had to become their own role models in a field where, historically, the stories about outdoor adventure almost always centered the experiences of white men. Women of color are challenging those stereotypes and claiming their space in the outdoor industry. Their efforts contribute to a movement to close “the adventure gap”- the wide disparity in representation for people of color in the outdoor industry.

Learn about the efforts of Navajo climber, Len Necefer, who is using indigenous geotagging to honor the sacred names of mountains he summitted, including sacred mountains of the Navajo Nation: Sisnaajiini (Blanca Peak) in Colorado, Dook’o’ooslííd, Nuvatukya’ovi, and Wi:munakwa (the San Francisco Peaks) in Arizona. Since beginning, Necefer has worked to create indigenous place-name geotags for more than 40 mountains.
